—MUSICAL THEATER —

(an orginal show)

“Dear listeners, welcome to this DJ set (sur) écoute {DJ Set Listening (In)} which will try and grab your ears!” Working like DJs, Mathieu Bauer and his team invite you on a journey to the history of music and sounds.

Three musicians and two actors will attempt an unbridled conference-concert fashioned on a DJ set. Using instruments, microphones and turntables, they will mix the sound live and share their pleasure as listeners by freely reinterpreting sound, text and musical excerpts from a wide repertoire that includes electro music. This playlist will be an opportunity to renew a longstanding reflection on music: between each piece, a voice-off will talk about the piece in context and situate it an abridged history of sound and music.

From a firefighters’ siren to a Bartók composition, via a text by Jankélévitch or an enchanting film score by Nino Rota, the lyrics of a hit whispered on a mike to an aria by Wagner, the percussion and electric arrangements by Mathieu Bauer and Sylvain Cartigny awake our capacity to listen. The set is transformed into a playground of sound experiments of all genres so that we can continue to ask ourselves what listening means.

Biography

Mathieu Bauer’s main concern is to create works whose topics resonate with the stakes of our times. Guided by the notion of a theater closely linked to music, cinema and literature, where montage is conceived as a way to put down barriers between artistic forms, Mathieu Bauer works from very diverse texts and materials: newspaper articles, essays, novels, films, operas, and of course theater plays. He composes new structures which combine rhythm, text, singing and image. Here lies the specificity of his work and the basic logic of his theatrical practice.
